Summer Reading Adventures | Fitfoodnista Collab

It’s been a while, lovelies, and here I come back without much of an explanation. Well, none, actually. However, I have something much, much better for you guys today. Lately, I’ve been trying my best to start reading again. So what better way than to just jump into whatever magical and awesome book(s) I can get my hands on? So I am teaming up with one of my best friends Becca from the FitFoodnista and we are going to share with you some of our summer reads. Our lists are fun and pretty different so take a look at both and share with us what you like!

  1.     The Trials of Apollo book 1: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

Yes, I had to get my hands on this book right when it came out because DEMIGODS, people! I miss the amazing world that Rick Riordan brought out with the gods and demigods. They’re pretty amazing in my personal opinion and so far I have been in love with Apollo. Y’know, more so than I already was. I’ll most likely go through my feelings for this book in more detail in a different post.

  1.     Asking for it by Louise O’Neill

I have yet to start this book but a lovely Youtuber named Hannah Witton spoke about it a while back and it just sounded absolutely interesting to me. In a way it makes me think about Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson except more public and perhaps more involved with the crime committed.

  1.     Flawed by Cecelia Ahern

I got this one from the April Owlcrate and have been trying really hard to get my hands on it. But alas, I decided to go with the ones that came first. This one, however, does sound like something I’d love. Dystopian, screwed up manipulative society: my, my how I’ve missed those dystopian societies.

  1.     Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

If you aren’t in the shadow world just yet you probably won’t understand why I am upset with myself for not having read this book yet. But they’re back. The Nephilim are back and there are more issues. All I am hoping for is for some of my favorite characters to resurface and do what they do best and kick some butt. With all new characters, whom were briefly introduced in the last of The Mortal Instruments I am pretty excited!

  1.     City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

I am almost done with this one. (Finally! I know). The last of the Mortal Instruments, and everything so far is getting intense. Characters are being introduced for the last of the Nephilim related series, The Dark Artifices. I just need a certain ship to set sail again before this book ends and all will be well.

Summer Book Wishlist:

  1.     Game of Thrones Series by George R.R. Martin
  2.     Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  3.     Zodiac novels by Romina Russell
  4.     Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan
  5.     Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

So there are a few books that I am going to enjoy soon, what about you guys? What’s on your TBR? What books can’t you wait to get your hands on?

Best,

Gissel

Figment Friday | Gemina and Coffee

It’s been a long  time since I’ve done a figment friday so here goes. Let’s try and make it happen again. Mainly because when I find a really interesting piece on Figment I need to tell someone about it soooo here goes everything.

  1. Gemina by Lindsey Stell.

This story was created a while back for the Good Vs. Evil contest on Figment. The rules were that the characters had to be twins and one of them had to be good while the other had to be evil. You were left to create the story. So what Lindsey did which I personally really enjoyed was that one sister was basically a good angel that gives life and the other took life. It’s an interesting concept in my opinion and I think it was well-written and I hope you guys do too.

2. Coffee by Coolio Dash

This story goes through the motions in the Westwood Diner, there are customers that through small narratives you get to know, and possibly relate to. A man sits there pondering his day after his recent breakup. A young woman does the same wondering about her life as it currently stands, maybe she would be better off if she were still as young as the waitress? Read it and find out what happens. It’s a short and sweet story that deals with life through alternating character points of view.

So there’s somethings for you guys to look into I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I know they’re pretty short but if you’re like me and your attention span lately only goes for so long then this is a good way to get started again, right?

Happy Birthday, Anne Shirley!

I heard of an eleven year old girl with red hair that changed the lives of those she came in contact with when she arrived into their lives. For a while I avoided this red-headed girl, I mean what could be so darn great about her? Silly eight year old me…everything.  The moment I decided to give Anne of Green Gables  a try I was absolutely smitten with her story. I think we all have that one character that we are just always ready to fight anyone for, because the characters become so deeply rooted into our systems that they are a part of us. You know what I mean, right? That character, or characters that have this thing that you know you can always count on. You can always go back to that character and their story, because sometimes you’re just itching to get back into the world that helped you out so much, that world that meant so much to you.

Anne of Green Gables is that for me. As a little girl I was always living in the clouds. Always. I was always making up stories in my head and on paper, I was always picturing things and I would get so distracted in my own mind and sometimes, much like Anne, I messed up on chores.

But there was just this solidarity of sorts when I read Anne of Green Gables, that I felt welcome and at home. I felt that Anne and I were kindred spirits. And ever since that first time that I read Anne of Green Gables in Elementary school I knew I wouldn’t let her go. Ever since then when I feel particularly homesick or I just need an old constant friend, I reread one of the books. Usually it’s Anne of Green Gables, but it can also be Anne of Windy Poplars, because I just love reading about Anne at school. It keeps me motivated. Anne’s House of Dreams just gives me all of the Anne and Gilbert feels and so much more, so if I’m nostalgic for that romance that I don’t have I go back there.

So today, March 2nd I would just like to wish this amazing character a happy birthday. I would like to take today to speak out to you all, and to Anne herself and say thank you. Thank you for teaching me about kindred spirits, and that I could be creative, and imaginative, and have my head in the clouds, thank you for letting me know that it’s okay to be a bit of an odd-ball.

I have a soft spot for Anne Shirley that even now, I can feel a bit emotional just typing this post. So Happy Birthday Anne Shirley!

Shadowhunters Episode One

Okay, I am breathing, I am forming coherent thoughts…or so I hope. Back when I was in high school my friend Molly introduced me to this amazing series she was into…The Mortal Instruments. This was back junior year. Now it’s been about six years and I think we can all assume how overly excited I was when this series became a movie. Remember this?the_mortal_instruments_-_city_of_bones_poster The movie was good, stuck true to the book (except for Valentine’s hair and attitude…) I am trying so hard not to go to the bad place of overly comparing. Anyways, Shadowhunters aired just last night on Freeform (voice over: the new name of ABCFamily) and I was super hyped up. I love the series, plus it seems that everyone was well cast and ready to take these characters that I love so much to life.

So because my brain cannot seem to stop comparing the book from the show let’s see how this post goes.

Things that I enjoyed about the first episode:

  1. The cast seems great so far. I like the youthfulness of the characters. The Nephilim are strong and muscular but still have that young look about them.
  2. I like that they throw in the effects for the magic or not magic of the Shadow world.
  3. The runes look the way I pictured them. Not the black lines, I mean when they wear out and are meant to look worn out and blank or pink.
  4. The relationships so far seem to be staying true to the books.
  5. Character traits so far seem to be accurate. Jace seems to be Alec and Izzy’s brother for life; siding with Izzy on some things (ex. “demons dig blondes”) while also maintaining his parabatai relationship with Alec.
  6. Alec seems to be staying true to his nature by already giving me that amazing feel of “I can’t stand this silly red-headed mundane chick why does Jace even care? Can’t we just leave her in a ditch somewhere?”
  7. Jace’s overly vain nature shows up and it made me very
  8. Magnus Bane and Isabel Lightwood. That is all.

Things that I didn’t enjoy as much about the first episode:

  1. Jocelyn Fairchild/Morgenstern ran away without a trace of the Nephilim and her old life to escape her relationship with the Circle. To get away from the Nephilim and prejudices. The reason she stayed close to Madam Dorothea and Magnus was so she would know when Valentine would rise again. She wanted Magnus just for the protection he would offer when she realized Clary had the Sight. I didn’t like that she kept weapons in the show. She seems great don’t get me wrong but she had no intention of telling Clary in the books. I do understand why they did it in the show though but because I couldn’t get over it, I’m shoving it out there.
  2. Maureen…did she literally replace all of Simon’s friends/band mates?
  3. Why is it so hard to give Valentine the luscious blondness that both of his sons have? The reason people end up seeing him in Jace? Aside from certain mannerisms that is.
  4. Luke is a cop not a bookstore owner.

So it was already stated that there would be differences between the books and the show which sense, even I am intrigued by whatever the changes will be and look forward to being shown something maybe I didn’t consider. The chronological order so far is accurate enough while throwing in some (so far) interesting twists. We get to see Jocelyn throwing Clary over to Magnus and getting him to block her Sight. Episode one ends shortly after Clary’s two-day coma at the Institute.

So far as a book-lover I am pleased with what this show demonstrated and I am actually pretty excited to see what kinds of spins they toss into it. So if any of you enjoy this series or just started watching what do you think so far? Who are you excited to see on screen? What are you excited to see happen?

I for one will be happy when the vampires kidnap Simon…and then most likely in season two when they get to the Seelie Court…wowza! That’s quite some waiting isn’t it?

Gissel

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Trailer

Please excuse my spat out water all over the screen and my massive squealing. Because as a member of the Harry Potter fandom let me just SCREAM AND GIGGLE AND YELP with pure and absolute joy at the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer. Seriously how amazing is this??? Guys I know it’s a year from now and I know you know. But can we all just take a moment to run with our wands out and scream because honestly…..giphy (we, we live). Seriously guys it’s like coming home. It’s like “popping out of the ground like daisies”. Just as some may have thought the Harry Potter fandom was well underground we just rise out of the ashes like a Phoenix and get hyped up for a whole year. And now there’s a trailer. There is proof  that this isn’t a dream. I’m way too excited, honestly I have no idea how much sense I am making and unfortunately, no one in my home understands why this is making me so happy. Watch the trailer here, or of Youtube, or both, or on other blogs. Re-watch it. I know I will 😀

Have a fantabulous day!

Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

Hiya guys,

Okay so this book that I am going to be telling you about is for younger readers but trust me we can all enjoy it. I mean seriously it’s got witty comments by both of the main characters, Phoebe a fourth grader and her new best unicorn friend, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. After Phoebe saves the very narcissistic Marigold from staring at her own reflection for too long she tells Phoebe that she will grant her one wish. This scene was probably one of the first if not THE first scene where I laughed because of Marigold’s response to Phoebe’s wishing for infinite wishes and money, and super powers: imafourthgrader phoebe and her unicorn of course after this and asking Phoebe for something realistic to wish for Phoebe wishes for Marigold to be her new best friend.

chickennuggetdream phoebe and her unicorn

We find out that Phoebe is an outsider as far as fourth graders go. She gets teased and made fun of, and even more so when she brings in her best friend the unicorn to show her class. To her surprise something called the Shield of Boringness prohibits anyone to be impressed by Marigold and results in Phoebe being made fun of even more. Phoebe teaches Marigold more about being human and has some witty comments to make to her new best friend. She wants to fit in and be popular with her peers, but eventually that stops being as important to her. She has someone to play with and that accepts her and her imagination which she uses quite often in this story.

Although Marigold is very self-centered she demonstrates more layers as the story goes on. She lowers the Shield of Boringness around herself so that Phoebe’s parents become more impressed by her because she knew it was important for Phoebe that her parents like Marigold. She also went to be ridden by Dakota, one of Phoebe’s less than friendly classmates who was also exposed to Marigold without the Shield of Boringness, and she promised Phoebe that she was still her best friend, she just had to do this for Dakota since it was her birthday. Marigold teaches Phoebe the importance of trying harder at her piano lessons as well. The two unlikely and very strange friends grow on each other and play games just like any other pair of young friends would…you know, despite Marigold being really old since she is a unicorn after all.

So if you guys want a nice graphic novel to read through or for any young kids that would enjoy reading this story, I would recommend it. There are some definite giggle worthy moments and adorable inserts of Phoebe’s dreams and imaginary visions.

Best of Luck!

Lady Midnight Sneak Peak

image

Okay guys so this time around the Nephilim starts out with Emma who is a Nephilim and knows it. She knows about the wars, and she knows who the Nephilim are and all of that good stuff. I was at first very drawn in because this time around well…she knows. Also the fact that it starts out while she and the rest of her friends; Julian, Cristina, Ty, Livvy, Tavvy are all learning about Shadowhunter history. We find out right away that Emma is parabatai with Jules (Julian) and that since last night he’s been a bit aloof and it bugs her, I mean come on why would you act like that with your parabatai?

Anyways, we are also introduced to their instructor Diana and Uncle Arthur who is the head of the San Francisco Institute which is where they are all living. Jules’ brother Mark had been taken by Faerie a while ago. There is an unwanted visit by Faerie into the Sanctuary despite laws that state that they really shouldn’t do that unless it is absolutely necessary. So they better have a good reason. They do, it’s the fact that there is a killer that they need help from the Institute to find…after all it’s the same killer that Emma and Cristina had been after.

Some of my personal highlights from this short sneak peak are for one thing back into Shadowhunter life! 2. Some familiar names were mentioned: Maia and Magnus Bane!!! Hello happiness! 3. This wonderful line from Jules: “If you ever speak to her like that again, there will be blood on the floor of the Sanctuary, and I do not care if they put me to death for it” (23). I personally just love watching Nephilim get defensive about their loved ones, it’s been a while since I’ve read up on Nephilim so it feels great to be back in that world!

That’s all I’ve got for you folks today, I can’t wait for the rest of this book to be out!

What about you, are you guys excited for more Shadowhunters?

Best,

Gissel
