“Katniss is an unreal female protagonist because she cries too much”

True words that someone dared to utter in front of me…

Katniss Everdeen, the Girl on Fire, heard of her? I hope you have because she’s the girl that everyone bet on. District 12’s hope for victory during the 74th annual Hunger Games. Is it ringing any bells yet? No? Okay, I guess I can tell you a bit more about her. Katniss Everdeen is this plain, yet extremely badass teenage girl who lives in an unpleasant dystopian society where the Capitol rules everything and everyone, the entire thing we now know to be as North America has been broken up into 13 districts, but when District 13 rebelled against the Capitol they were completely eradicated, and if that didn’t teach everyone not to go against the Capitol, a tradition was made where you take two kids ages 12-17 a boy and a girl from each district to fight each other to the death in an arena. Well, if that doesn’t teach people I don’t know what does.  Oh wait there’s also this thing called poverty I forgot to mention, yeah it happens when you are not on the Capitol’s favorites list, your district just gets ignored except when it’s time to shove your kids off into the  Games to be killed. Since being ignored and last on the food-chain isn’t fun for anyone involved, people break the rules to go outside of the gates, and hunt for their own game in order to have a decent meal.

Before her father died Katniss’ father taught her how to break those rules and get a decent meal for her family, and how to trade in the District 12 Black Market. So she has some survival skills.

So Katniss has gained great hunting skills in her lifetime which is great of she was ever the champion for her District. However, it is Prim, Katniss’ little sister who is chosen from the reaping. This doesn’t settle well with Katniss and she takes her little sister’s place. Yeah she’s scared out of her mind and yeah it takes a bit for it to register as she’s standing there looking at her entire district saying goodbye. Katniss doesn’t like the Capitol, she knows they’re bad people and that the Games are a load of poop used to control the Districts. So yeah she’s probably the Tribute with the worse attitude but somehow her team helps her to become a threat to the other Tributes and gives her hope to win this thing.
Katniss cries. Katniss saves herself. She saves Peeta. She helps Rue. She dislikes her team. She yells at Haymitch. She dislikes Effie. She hates the Capitol and president Snow. She gives a District 12 goodbye to Rue. She cries for Rue. She resists killing other tributes. Katniss pretends to love Peeta. Katniss heals her wounds. Katniss cries.
Katniss does a lot of things people. It isn’t just crying and winning. Katniss Everdeen is a teenage girl. She survives a battle to the death and is trained to kill. She technically should kill children wherever they show up around her but she couldn’t bring herself to do so. What if it was her sister? That would have been my thought too. I have brothers and cousins I would kill for. Not kill them. So honestly, as a teenage girl, I know I wouldn’t have held it together like Katniss did. I would have cried more. I would have been more of a jerk. I would have lost hope the day I turned 12. I know many girls now-a-days that claim to be all strong and tough and cunning and would “love to kill someone” but I know for a fact if any of them were put into a situation where they had to go through with it-they’d crack. Girls in reality cry. That’s a fact. The strongest most cunning and tough as nails girls will cry. If you have to fear for your life and kill people you would cry if you were a teenage girl. Period.

So what do you guys think? Am I completely off in thinking real girls cry and Katniss handled herself very well?
As always feel free to share your opinions.
